Of every stat in a conversation, "who texts first" is the most brutally informative — because initiating costs something. It risks looking eager. It hands the other person the power to leave you on read. Doing it anyway is the clearest low-key signal of interest that exists in texting.

Why initiation matters more than reply speed

Anyone can reply — politeness, boredom and guilt all produce replies. Starting a conversation is different: nobody breadcrumbs themselves. When someone opens a chat with you, they thought of you unprompted and acted on it. That's the entire game in one metric.

What's a normal split?

• 50/50 to 65/35 — healthy. Somebody always starts a bit more; that's personality, not pathology.
• 70/30 — worth watching. Fine if their replies are warm and fast; concerning if paired with dryness.
